Best songs ever

SBLC

I have been following THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING STONES and BOB DYLAN and LEONARD COHEN since I was 16 years old.

They and their songs and song lines have accompanied me since I can think and reflect.

Now LEONARD COHEN has died, and having retired for a few tears already, I have the time to dig myself into lyrics and the music and find out, why I have always adored these artists.

I was stunned, when I read about Bob Dylan having received the Nobel Prize of Literature and understood that something in his lyrics and songs has impressed others as well.

QUOTE from Bob Dylan „To Ramona“:
„I’d forever talk to you

But soon my words,

They would turn into a meaningless ring,

For deep in my heart

I know there is no help I can bring,

Everything passes

Everything changes,

Just do what you think you should do,

As someday maybe,

Who knows, Baby,

I’ll come and be crying to you.“

SBBD

These lines were sucked in and digested by a young indivual from Germany, trying to understand English at school, who had learned from his FATHER:

„Boys never cry …

You are not a sissy, are you …?“

I did not understand his thoughts, nor did I reflect how much he was educated by NAZI Teachers.

Here my list of my favourite songs and the lyrics – I have always wanted to learn them by heart and sing them myself with my guitar.

However my efforts over the last 30 years are pretty poor – so I guess you will have to go with the original versions …

Whenever I have the chance to see a life concert, I am blown away once a song out of this list is performed – but back to the original version is always a very special and precious moment of My 3rd Life …

1. John Lennon – Imagine

Imagine there’s no heaven

It’s easy if you try

No hell below us

Above us only sky

Imagine all the people

Living for today (ah ah ah)

Imagine there’s no countries

It isn’t hard to do

Nothing to kill or die for

And no religion, too

Imagine all the people

Living life in peace

You may say that I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions

I wonder if you can

No need for greed or hunger

A brotherhood of man

Imagine all the people

Sharing all the world

You may say that I’m a dreamer

But I’m not the only one

I hope someday you’ll join us

And the world will live as one

2. The Beatles – John Lennon – In My Life

There are places I’ll remember

All my life, though some have changed

Some forever, not for better

Some have gone and some remain

All these places have their moments

With lovers and friends I still can recall

Some are dead and some are living

In my life, I’ve loved them all

But of all these friends and lovers

There is no one compares with you

And these memories lose their meaning

When I think of love as something new

Though I know I’ll never lose affection

For people and things that went before

I know I’ll often stop and think about them

In my life, I love you more

Though I know I’ll never lose affection

For people and things that went before

I know I’ll often stop and think about them

In my life, I love you more

In my life– I love you more

3. Leonard Cohen – In My Secret Life

In my secret life

In my secret life

In my secret life

I saw you this morning

You were moving so fast

Can’t seem to loosen my grip

On the past

And I miss you so much

There’s no one in sight

And we’re still making love

In my secret life

In my secret life

I smile when I’m angry

I cheat and I lie

I do what I have to do

To get by

But I know what is wrong

And I know what is right

And I’d die for the truth

In my secret life

In my secret life

Hold on, hold on, my brother

My sister, hold on tight

I finally got my orders

I’ll be marching through the morning

Marching through the night

Moving cross the borders

Of my secret life

Looked through the paper

Makes you wanna cry

Nobody cares if the people

Live or die

And the dealer wants you thinking

That it’s either black or white

Thank God it’s not that simple

In my secret life

I bite my lip

I buy what I’m told

From the latest hit

To the wisdom of old

But I’m always alone

And my heart is like ice

And it’s crowded and cold

In my secret life

In my secret life

In my secret life

In my secret life

In my secret life

In my secret life

In my secret life

In my secret life

4. Bob Dylan – Tangled Up In Blue

Early one mornin‘ the sun was shinin‘

I was layin‘ in bed

Wondrin‘ if she’d changed at all

If her hair was still red

Her folks they said our lives together

Sure was gonna be rough

They never did like

Mama’s homemade dress

Papa’s bank book wasn’t big enough

And I was standin‘ on the side of the road

Rain fallin‘ on my shoes

Heading out for the east coast

Lord knows I’ve paid some dues

Gettin‘ through

Tangled up in blue

She was married when we first met

Soon to be divorced

I helped her out of a jam I guess

But I used a little too much force

We drove that car as far as we could

Abandoned it out west

Split up on a dark sad night

Both agreeing it was best

She turned around to look at me

As I was walkin‘ away

I heard her say over my shoulder

We’ll meet again some day

On the avenue

Tangled up in blue

I had a job in the great north woods

Working as a cook for a spell

But I never did like it all that much

And one day the axe just fell

So I drifted down to New Orleans

Where I was looking for to be employed

Workin‘ for a while on a fishin‘ boat

Right outside of Delacroix

But all the while I was alone

The past was close behind

I seen a lot of women

But she never escaped my mind

And I just grew

Tangled up in blue

She was workin‘ in a topless place

And I stopped in for a beer

I just kept lookin‘ at the side of her face

In the spotlight so clear

And later on as the crowd thinned out

I’s just about to do the same

She was standing there in back of my chair

Said to me, Don’t I know your name?

I muttered somethin‘ under my breath

She studied the lines on my face

I must admit I felt a little uneasy

When she bent down to tie the laces

Of my shoe

Tangled up in blue

She lit a burner on the stove

And offered me a pipe

I thought you’d never say hello, she said

You look like the silent type

Then she opened up a book of poems

And handed it to me

Written by an Italian poet

From the thirteenth century

And everyone of them words rang true

And glowed like burnin‘ coal

Pourin‘ off of every page

Like it was written in my soul

From me to you

Tangled up in blue

I lived with them on Montague Street

In a basement down the stairs

There was music in the cafes at night

And revolution in the air

Then he started into dealing with slaves

And something inside of him died

She had to sell everything she owned

And froze up inside

And when finally the bottom fell out

I became withdrawn

The only thing I knew how to do

Was to keep on keepin‘ on

Like a bird that flew

Tangled up in blue

5. Bob Dylan – Simple Twist of Fate

So now I’m goin‘ back again

I got to get to her somehow

All the people we used to know

They’re an illusion to me now

Some are mathematicians

Some are carpenters‘ wives

Don’t know how it all got started

I don’t know what they’re doin‘ with their lives

But me, I’m still on the road

Headin‘ for another joint

We always did feel the same

We just saw it from a different point

Of view

Tangled up in blue

They sat together in the park

As the evening sky grew dark

She looked at him and he felt a spark

Tingle to his bones

‚Twas then he felt alone

And wished that he’d gone straight

And watched out for a simple twist of fate

They walked along by the old canal

A little confused, I remember well

And stopped into a strange hotel

With a neon burnin‘ bright

He felt the heat of the night

Hit him like a freight train

Moving with a simple twist of fate

A saxophone someplace far-off played

As she was walkin‘ on by the arcade

As the light bust through a beat-up shade

Where he was waking up

She dropped a coin into the cup

Of a blind man at the gate

And forgot about a simple twist of fate

He woke up, the room was bare

He didn’t see her anywhere

He told himself he didn’t care

Pushed the window open wide

Felt an emptiness inside

To which he just could not relate

Brought on by a simple twist of fate

He hears the ticking of the clocks

And walks along with a parrot that talks

Hunts her down by the waterfront docks

Where the sailors all come in

Maybe she’ll pick him out again

How long must he wait?

One more time, for a simple twist of fate

People tell me it’s a sin

To know and feel too much within

I still believe she was my twin

But I lost the ring

She was born in spring

But I was born too late

Blame it on a simple twist of fate

6. Bob Dylan – Shelter From The Storm

‚Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and blood

When blackness was a virtue the road was full of mud

I came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

And if I pass this way again, you can rest assured

I’ll always do my best for her, on that I give my word

In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warm

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involved

Everything up to that point had been left unresolved

Try imagining a place where it’s always safe and warm

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail

Poisoned in the bushes an‘ blown out on the trail

Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

Suddenly I turned around and she was standin‘ there

With silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair

She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thorns

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

Now there’s a wall between us, somethin‘ there’s been lost

I took too much for granted, I got my signals crossed

Just to think that it all began on an uneventful morn

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

Well, the deputy walks on hard nails and the preacher rides a mount

But nothing really matters much, it’s doom alone that counts

And the one-eyed undertaker, he blows a futile horn

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

I’ve heard newborn babies wailin‘ like a mournin‘ dove

And old men with broken teeth stranded without love

Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlorn

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes

I bargained for salvation and she gave me a lethal dose

I offered up my innocence I got repaid with scorn

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

Well, I’m livin‘ in a foreign country but I’m bound to cross the line

Beauty walks a razor’s edge, someday I’ll make it mine

If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were born

Come in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

7. Leonard Cohen – Bird On A Wire

Like a bird on a wire

Like a drunk in a midnight choir

I have tried in my way to be free

Like a fish on a hook

Like a knight in some old fashioned book

I have saved all my ribbons for thee

And if I, if I have been unkind

I just hope you will let it go by

And if I, if I have been untrue

I hope you know it was never to you

Like a baby stillborn

Like a beast with his horn

I have torn everyone who reached out to me

But I swear by this song

And by all I have done wrong

I’ll make it all up to be

I saw a young man leaning on his wooden crutch

He called out to me, „Don’t ask for so much“

And a young woman leaning in her darkened door

She cried out to me, „Why not ask for more“

Like a bird on a wire

Like a drunk in a midnight choir

I have tried in my way to be free

8. Simon and Garfunkel – Bridge Over Troubled Water

When you’re weary, feeling small
When tears are in your eyes, I’ll dry them all (all)
I’m on your side, oh, when times get rough
And friends just can’t be found
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you’re down and out
When you’re on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you (ooo)
I’ll take your part, oh, when darkness comes
And pain is all around
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh, if you need a friend
I’m sailing right behind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

9. The Beatles – Let it be

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shine until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
